somehow suffered amnesia where he's concerned. It had me rolling my eyes for most of the movie as everything seemed so convoluted. It was obvious that he was being tricked somehow, but why? And how could it possibly make any sense?

I was happily surprised that the story came together seamlessly. I couldn't have predicted that the riduclousness on the screen would eventually be proven reasonable, but they pulled it off. Amazing that 3/4 of the movie could be saved by the last fourth (usually it's the other way around), but there ya go.

B
<img width='1' height='1' and sisters. He then proceeds to mess up their well-ordered lives with his complete lack of guile.

This is one of those "the screw-up is the only one who actually has his life together" stories. Of course, I say that and then can't think of a single example of a prior movie that falls in that category -- but I'm sure there is one since it felt like I'd type='text'>The Fall (2008)

What a lovely film.

It reminded me a bit of A Little Princess, in that we have a storyteller whose tale becomes a part of the film. In this case the narrator is Roy, a stuntman convalescing from both a crippling fall and a broken heart. The listener is young Alexandria, also recuperating in the hospital due to a fall, but with the advantage of mobility since it was her arm that was hurt.

There's the part of the story that is the epic tale that Roy weaves for Alexandria. We hear the words Roy speaks but see what Alexandria visualizes. The characters have the same faces as people from her life and her interpretations (sometimes changing on-the-fly) are our illustrations. For example: when Roy makes one of the characters an Indian, he refers to a "wigwam" while Alexandria sees a man from India in his palace. The visuals are simply stunning.

And then there's the "real world" half of the movie, in which Roy is suicidal and depressed and Alexandria simply wants to cheer her new friend up. Oh my word -- it's magic.

A
Robin Hood (2010)

I guess this is what would be called a "genesis" movie: how Robin Longstride went from honest soldier to outlaw. It stops there, however -- we don't get any of those colorful robbing from the rich scenes. That'd be fodder for a probably pretty decent sequel.

There's a whole lot going on here and dozens of characters to track, but it never felt overwhelming. The look and feel was right, the faux history made sense, and the romance never took over the story, instead going for organic rather than manipulated. I thought everyone did a heckuva job with their roles. If this political history stuff was more my movie thing, I'd recommend it pretty highly.
Fair Game (2010)

Naomi Watts plays Valerie Plame, a real-life CIA operative who was outed by the government, seemingly just to get back at her husband for writing a piece criticizing the government.

I remember watching this event unfold and how I felt, at best, annoyed on her behalf. Although I of course can't know how accurate the film is, it seems logical that an undercover agent would have operations in progress that would be jeopardized by revealing her true identity. That this seeming act of "oh yeah? well take this!" childishness could do more than simply rob a woman of her job and a family of their privacy but was okayed anyway demonstrates the dangers of having so few holding so much power.

I went from annoyed to downright sick at the renewed realization that we allowed a group of lying bullies to play games with our country for years and years, playing upon our fears and patriotism to get their way and have us cheer them for it. I don't know if I would've done what Joe Wilson did, but he's one man. And I believe he's a brave one.

OK. Back to the movie. Great job of explaining what was happening and why it mattered. Seemed to do a good job of getting the audience on its side (since I was already there I'm guessing at that). Could've worked harder at showing us the far-reaching damage incurred by the revelation -- the fact that this facet seemed somewhat marginalized helped to sell its accuracy/lack of sensationalism though.

B
<img Pegg, as a finally-field-qualified agent, and the iffy equipment that had a tendency to not work as intended. There were also a few truly innovative action sequences: a climb up the Burj type='text'>Jane Eyre (2011)

This is the fourth adaptation of Jane Eyre I've seen and, despite being the most elaborate of them, it's also the least effective.

Having read Jane Eyre, I know it's not exactly bursting with joy -- but this production went out of its way to be depressing. It was dark to the point of oppression early on and the orphanage scenes, told in flashback, felt like flashbacks in that they came off as exaggerated and cartoonish with few details. The caricatures were there, but the loneliness that made her one friend such a brilliant bright spot barely registered.

I watched it with Gary and he liked it quite a bit more than I did so I can't help but wonder, since I've read it and seen a fair few of the film versions, whether this DOES stand on its own when not suffering by comparison. Ah well, I've just got to go with what I think with type='text'>The Life Before Her Eyes (2008)

We see Diana, a woman in her mid-30s in a comfortable marriage and home, with a bit of an indulged brat of a young daughter. We then see Diana as a high school student, spending time with her best friend right before tragedy -- in the form of a student gunning down classmates and teachers -- strikes.

The story is told in this kind of back-and-forth: adult Diana is coping with the upcoming anniversary of the tragedy while teen Diana butts heads with her mother and rebels in general, while enjoying her deep friendship with the religious Maureen. I was annoyed by the back-and-forth at times...things got a little arty (especially near the end) and the bratty daughter's behavior made my jaw tighten.

But then the end finally came and the question of "what happened" was finally answered and, I have to say, it was worth it. Even the flourishes that were annoying me moments before became poetic in retrospect. In short: I bought it.

B+
Midnight in Paris (2011)

Owen Wilson’s never looked worse and Rachel McAdam’s never acted worse. The usual Allen affectations abound. I checked, and I haven’t loved a movie of Woody’s since 1989’s Crimes and Misdemeanors; the closest thing to a winner since then has been Don't Drink the Water, but that's a TV movie.

I’m just tired tired tired of the angsty manic chatter that has become his go-to tic for all of his protagonists. It requires more than simple suspension of disbelief. It demands suspension of memory of all of his other films and of a desire for something different. If this were my first Allen film, I might think it worthy of a B or B+, but since I’ve seen so many, it just seems like a pale imitation of The Purple Rose of Cairo mixed with a bit of Bill and Ted’s or Forrest Gump.

C

Fright Night (2011)

Wastes no time letting you know that the nerdy teen spouting vampire theories is spot on: there is, indeed, a creature of the night in suburbia and keeping a low-profile isn't one of his priorities.

This was the perfect combination of ridiculous, funny, and scary -- I’m guessing that Buffy was more than a passing inspiration (having the Criss Angelesque illusionist's self-given title be “Vampire Slayer” only adds to this argument). They decide to go north to the states. The first 30 minutes or so were interminable -- the cinematography was supposed to be MEANINGFUL, I’m sure, but it came off as simply affected. Once they start their journey, things pick up considerably.

They hire a coyote, crawl through an old sewer line, get settled into a motel that serves as a "cheap Mexicans" work force tenement, get jobs, learn English, and dodge INS. This is just not strong enough storytelling to have any impact. It’s like an after-school special about the less fortunate; you get the point that life is hard for immigrants, but only because it’s hammered in the dialogue -- not because you actually feel it.

C

Red Riding: In the Year of Our Lord 1980 (2010)

Less confusing than the first one and it also featured a serial killer whose methodology made me feel a little less gross (prostitutes rather than children as victims is, somehow, much easier to take). But it still felt deliberately murky.

It’s like a thick-with-accents and some-scenes-left-out version of LA Confidential.

B

The Adjustment Bureau (2011)

The trailers for this movie made it look so stupid. It’s a decent movie, but without the constant reminders that this stuff really happened -- these are real people -- I wouldn’t have been very interested.

C+

The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (2010)

Rather dispassionate entry into the series. It's basically Jacob and Edward vying for Bella’s affections by means of a scowl-off, apparently.

Meanwhile, an army of brand-new vamps is being amassed to take Bella down. This prequel, however, felt very slight. The kids' powers (exception being Raven, the blue shape shifter) were laughably weird.

Fassbender is magnetically intense (good thing he's playing Magneto, eh?), but I'll wager he thought that the movie's tone would be more serious than it ended up being. And, oh wow, January Jones canNOT act. It’s a miracle that she does so well as Betty Draper. My guess is that it's the only role she'll ever get right.

C

Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work (2010)

Celebrities -- and, more specifically, comedians -- are a different breed. They are driven and desperate while being both tough and sensitive. I don’t envy them one little bit.

Although I've been a fan of Rivers for a long time, mostly for her honesty on her short-lived talk show and her willingness to "go there" when interviewing award-show-goers on the red carpet, I discovered during this film that I simply don’t find her stand-up very funny. I think she relies more on shock and ribaldry than cleverness -- but I’m still rooting for her.

This was a fascinating peek behind the curtain at a woman who will never stop working -- and she works hard -- because she'll never stop craving attention and acceptance. I read this lovely lyrical book several months back and then saw this...which I'm sure robbed me of some of the pleasures of this haunting film version.

The filmmakers did succeed in capturing the poetic “otherworldly” feel of these young lives -- it was a gorgeously quiet movie -- but they missed completely some of the subtext. On its own merits, I think the movie works, though it’s a bit more of a downer than it needed to be. In stripping down the story, they stripped away a bit of what made it such a compelling one.

B

Food, Inc. I think he brings every ounce of himself, even to the fluffiest of roles. There's some worth to this film; it's not throwaway and it doesn’t even fit squarely in the “fluffy” category. It has great effects, lots of humor and good action.

The problem -- and it’s huge -- is the “star” Jay Baruchel. This kid is a talentless non-presence with an annoying vocal delivery. I kept thinking of how much more fun this would’ve been with almost ANY other actor of his age in the role. He single-handedly ruined it. I probably would’ve gone with B+ if Baruchel wasn't there to snivel and shrug his way through all of his scenes.

C

In a Better World (2011)

I love a film that can capture youth in a believable way. Few films get a real hold of the angst and drama and “this is too much to bear” that comes with being 10-16. There is nothing I could be offered that would make me willing to return to that age.

Though the youth feel fully-drawn, the story is so much more than a coming of age drama. It’s bigger than that, in both an emotional and a global sense, and so powerful. If I had to boil down the moral I'd say that it's "we must look out for each other." Nah. Though true, it's just far too simplistic to paste onto this movie as though it could be summed up in a sentence.

A-

Brotherhood (2011)

Frat prank involving a convenience store theft goes really wrong when a pledge gets shot. It shocked me in the best of ways. It was, quite simply, the most exciting thing I'd ever seen in a theater. When Forrest Gump took the Oscar, my faith in Hollywood was tested for the first time (hey -- I was young).

So, by now, I've seen it at least 7 times...I'd guess it as closer to 11 though. I showed it to my younger son and, while he liked it, he was not wowed. I had to point out all of the stuff that he'd "seen before" started right here in Tarantino's masterpiece, a label I truly believe it deserves. Yeah, there are a couple of sequences that feel slower than I remember them (Marsellus lecturing Butch in the bar & Walken's very funny but too long monologue regarding the very uncomfortable piece of metal) but it still works wonderfully.

The cast is perfect. The dialogue is still wonderful. The cast does a flawless job of portraying their bereavement without making it seem false. The flashbacks to "before the accident" are heartbreaking in their everyday contentedness. What I saw this time around was different than what I remembered from the first viewings. The possibility of beauty and poetry and sadness exists in almost every scene and I think it's just too much to extract in one sitting.

An original, emotionally draining movie.

A+

The Housemaid (2011)

Tense and sad story of a lower-class and slightly simple girl being hired as a nanny/servant. The film only improves on the source material by removing Blomkvist's bed-hopping and a lot of meaningless details (sandwiches? again??), and by giving us a glimpse -- although it comes rather late -- of how Lisbeth became dysfunctional. When she starts dating John (John C. During it, a former Polish peasant turned countess (to a much older count) worships Napoleon, but is alarmed to find out that he is interested in her romantically. When her country asks her to indulge him for their sake, she obliges and falls in love.

But then things get very blah moviewise. This is what I *think* the filmmakers hoped would be running through my head: "why can't they work it out?" "Look, they were so in love!" But instead I was just thinking "ugh -- I hate everyone on the screen."

I think that starting the narrative near the end of the relationship was a mistake. When we meet Ryan Gosling's character, he seems like dead weight in the relationship, so I was against him before I saw anything that might have made me root for him. I'm also not sure why the costume designer thought that traveling to a mid-eighties flea market to pick up his wardrobe (where else could they have found a bald eagle sweatshirt and rapist glasses?) was the perfect stylistic choice. And then what was up with the camera work? The fact that we were right up in everyone's faces made it almost impossible to watch and extremely hard to take.

But the biggest problem? It was boring.

D

Surrogates (2009)

This is a interesting idea: most people choose not to risk their bodies out in the world, opting instead to have realistic avatars, controlled from home, do the first-hand living for them. It's hard to imagine Nicole Kidman's character, Becca, ever having been anything other than repressed and, even as I say that, I know it's not exactly fair. People deal with grief in different ways yada yada, but I couldn't get any empathy going for her or her similarly bland husband.

The only times that the movie really became worth watching was in the scenes with the teen driver who hit the boy. That kid was brilliant and, even though he seemed to have been deeply affected by the accident, he also seemed to be alive...as though he was incorporating the pain into himself rather than either ignoring or letting it take over completely.

It's not bad, but the couple was just too generically sad.

C

The Proposal (2009)

"Hey -- The Proposal is coming on Starz in a few minutes. A guy gets trapped...but rather than having the audience remain trapped along with his body, we were allowed to tag along with his mind instead. It's an emotional, tense, and affecting journey. "oh no! we've still got Fall and Winter to go!"

Tom and Gerri are a married couple in their late 50s/early 60s and they still enjoy each other's company. The problem is that this is less about Tom and Gerri, who simply serve as an anchor, than about the desperately needy and bordering-on-manic Mary. I simply don't know anyone like Mary -- but that might be because I instinctively walk the other way if I meet anyone even half as self-centered as she is. I could barely take her drunken whining for the duration of the film, so the prospect of actually having her be an interloper into my private life for an entire year would make me seriously contemplate moving (though, to be fair, Tom and Gerri had had enough of her by Autumn, too).

As Gary said on the way out of the theater, "It might be a slice of life, but what's interesting about this particular slice of this particular life?" Personally, I was interested in the life of Imelda Staunton's depressed housewife, introduced at the beginning of the story only to vanish after her second scene. I kept hoping she'd come back.

C

Duplicity (2009)

There's this pretty woman -- and she's some kind of insider corporate mole chick. And then they start working together and become lovers and design some fierce "let's get rich by finding some corporate patsies" plan, but they can't really trust each other because they double-cross for a living and -- oh -- I'm tired.

The timeline isn't linear and I had a hard time keeping track of "when" we were and what I knew. I was often confused and never quite sure of who to trust...all of which would've been fine if I cared a fig about our devious couple. Since I didn't (I mean, this pair seemed more compatible in Closer, for crying out loud), I just became increasingly frustrated at the twists and turns and double-backs. Unfortunately, I saw it in my living room rather than in a theater wearing 3-D glasses, and I'm thinking that rather robbed the film of what made it so special to the first-round reviewers.

It was adequate, sure, but it wasn't original or very funny (a chuckle here and there was all I could muster) or transportive. No matter -- he's got it sewn up this time around with the more showy role of the stammering Prince Albert, Duke of York.

The speech impediment, which has plagued him since childhood, is a particular embarrassment since he's pressed to speak publicly with more frequency as the king, his father, ages and his elder brother is away sowing copious wild oats. Firth does an amazing job garnering sympathy with his panic-stricken eyes and then slapping down that pity with his undeniable royalty. This is a man with a problem, but he's no commoner. His new therapist, however, demands a more familiar relationship -- another hurdle for the irritable Albert.

I do have one question...if the "headphone" anecdote is true, why the heck didn't he simply wear them every time he was to record a royal speech?

A-

Black Swan (2010)

Natalie Portman plays Nina, a ballerina who's worked tirelessly to be perfect and who desperately wants to dance lead in Swan Lake. The only thing holding her back is her inability to allow herself to be anything other than perfection...which means that her dancing lacks a danger and looseness the director desires for the role. I'm not a dance fan and the style about which I know the least is probably ballet, but the cinematography of the movie somehow lends its eye to the viewer. I could see how Nina's moves were more sharp than beautiful and I loved the way Portman wore the determination all over her face. The more desperate she became to nail her moves, the more uncomfortable I was.

The story as a whole was disorienting in the best of ways. Tricks that would normally make me nuts -- like a camera spinning around its subject -- were at home here, furthering the vision rather than distracting from it. The final dance, especially, was magnificent. The more I think about what I saw, the more impressed I am.

A-

Down Terrace (2010)

Although IMDb, the Netflix sleeve, and most critics dub this a "black comedy," I couldn't find anything funny here.

Here's what I *think* the story was: a father and his middle-aged son, some low-management types in a loose criminal organization, are released from prison. The minute they get back to their rundown cookie-cutter home, which they share with the father's matter-of-factly humorless wife, they start wondering whose snitching put them away. The prison pen-pal of the son shows up pregnant, adding to the tension, and people start getting killed. And sometimes there are folky jam sessions because that's how they do.

I was bored, annoyed, confused, and never entertained. This time, however, the material was interesting and he didn't play a slimeball. Yay!

Basically, the one-man crew for a fuel company's outpost on the Moon is nearing the end of his three-year contract.
