Critical MeMe

Time spent watching films, even crappy ones, is time well-spent.

These aren't comments on ALL of the movies through which I've cried, yawned, laughed, and rolled my eyes, but just about everything I've seen since early 2002 is here plus a few from earlier. Post dates reflect my screening & parenthetical dates are the year of US release (aka Oscar eligibility).
Yeah, a movie review blog isn't very original. But originality is overrated. Just ask Michael Bay.

Side Effects (2013)

Smart but muted thriller about a depressed woman who murders her husband while on an anti-depressant. It’s really well-acted but some of the shot choices were weird and and, unless they were intended to slightly annoy the viewer, they missed the mark with me.

Bernie (2012)

Fascinating and entertaining true story of Bernie, a beloved small-town funeral director who killed the meanest lady in town.

This is just such a nutty charmer of a movie that I doubted its veracity quite a few times. Dozens of townspeople tell their story documentary-style (and we find out in the end credits that the people we've seen are the actual townspeople), and they do so with gusto. A pleasure to watch.
