Enough Said (2013)

Two divorcees meet and hit it off almost immediately, but she realizes fairly early on that the mess of an ex-husband one of her clients is always talking down is actually her new boyfriend.

It's a treasure of a film with absolutely lovely performances. There wasn’t a false note in the writing or the execution.

The Great Dictator (1940)

Warner Bros. wisely lifted the best bit from this film for its “Rabbit of Seville” Bugs Bunny short.

The movie’s too long and sprawling and obvious. I admit that I’m not sure whether it just seemed obvious to my very jaded eyes or if it actually was, but I think it’s safe to say that if it ever worked, it doesn't anymore. Slapstick and barely-veiled genocide just aren’t a good match. This didn't work for me for exactly the same reasons that Life is Beautiful didn’t.

Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

I like to think I’m not much for summer tentpole flicks, but then something like this comes along and sweeps me up in its popcorny fun. It's got a whole bunch of action, but there's a supporting story that takes the trouble to be intelligent. Gary and I may have pulled a *bit* too hard on the thread after it was over, but once we said “screw it -- that was a great time at the movies,” we were much happier.
