Savior (1998)

It’s hard to review a movie like Savior without giving away major plot points—and I just don’t wanna do that, darn it! Dennis Quaid plays Josh/Guy (see? He’s got two names, but if I tell you why, I’ll ruin something….cryptic, huh) who is fighting in the Foreign Legion. Their Legion trainer explains their role when he says, “We fight anywhere in the world. We have no home. The Foreign Legion is our home, gentlemen!”

Guy’s eyes hold no light, they’re almost blank, when we see him fighting for the Serbs in Bosnia. This is not his war—he just shoots in it. He becomes unavoidably entangled with a woman and her newborn and the light in his eyes flickers, despite his attempts to squelch it. It’s a beautiful, haunting film.

A+
