Das Boot (1982)
I saw the 3.5-hour director's cut and am unsure of what could have been left out to manage a 2.5-hour theatrical release. Yeah, there were some scenes that didn't seem to move the plot much and others that felt redundant, but isn't that necessary in order to convey the tedium of war?
There's just a lot to admire here. The captain isn't perfect, crew members fray while others outright fail, but it's not about the individual. It's about the team -- the whole -- and it definitely holds the attention. This feels like a true feat considering that at least 80% of the movie was within the confines of cramped metal tube.
